"DESPAIR" (WILL HE JUMP?) 1894 - A VARIANT OF THE INFAMOUS "SCREAM." THESE TWO MUNCH PAINTINGS, IF AND WHEN APPRECIATED TOGETHER, CAUSE ME TO CONCLUDE THAT EDVARD MUNCH INTENDED TO PRESENT THE SHOCK AT THE SCENE OF A SUICIDE. UNFORTUNATELY, "THE SCREAM" IS ROUTINELY VIEWED, DISCUSSED, AND ANALYZED AS A SINGLE PAINTING; SUCH AN APPROACH MISSES THE FULL MENTAL TRAUMA OF SUICIDE TO AND THE IMPACT OF THE PAIN FELT BY THOSE LIVING (INCLUDING MUNCH). |

Kehinde Wiley is a contemporary American artist. He gained renown as a portrait painter and was commissioned to paint the official portrait of former President Barack Obama for viewing in the Smithsonian. Shirley and I were lucky to personally view and photograph Kehinde's Exhibition at Orsay entitled AN ARCHEOLOGY OF SILENCE. Presented below are moomoocow's photostudy of three works of monumental size: (1) Femme Piquée Par Un Serpent (Mamadou Gueye), Woman Bitten by a Snake, 2022; (2) Untitled Black Person on Horse, a sculpture; and (3) the Young Tarantine, a sculpture. |
