Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, known in the United States as Lafayette, is buried in one far corner of the Picpus Cemetery alongside his wife Adrienne de la Fayette. Picpus Cemetery, hidden in the 12th arrondissement awayf rom the better trod paths of most tourists, is the largest public cemetery in Paris. This cemetery holds the remains of 1,306 victims executed between June 14th and July. 27th, 1794, during the peak of the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution. In 1795, the Marquise Adrienne de La Fayette was to be executed but Elizabeth Monroe, wife of James Monroe visited the imprisoned marquise on the day before the execution and declared she would come again the next day. Not wanting a row with the United States, the life of Mrs. Lafayette was spared. Today, Lafayette rests in a modest grave and under soil imported from Bunker Hill together with Adrienne. An American flag accompanies him at all times. The little chapel, Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix ("Our Lady of Peace") is tended by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart. The priests of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts are referred to as "The Picpus Fathers" because of the order's origins from the street. Having also visited Versailles and Napoleon's Tomb, this entire affair is refreshingly modest and deeply meaningful for Shirley and me. |
