The Omphalos Stone marking the "Navel of the Earth" |
Delphi (ˈdɛlfaɪ, ˈdɛlfi/; Greek: Δελφοί [ðelˈfi]), in legend previously called Pytho (Πυθώ), was an ancient sacred precinct and the seat of Pythia, the major oracle who was consulted about important decisions throughout the ancient classical world. The ancient Greeks considered the centre of the world to be in Delphi, marked by the stone monument known as the Omphalos of Delphi (navel). Wikipedia Pythia (ˈpɪθiə; Ancient Greek: Πυθία) was the name of the high priestess of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. She specifically served as its oracle and was known as the Oracle of Delphi. Her title was also historically glossed in English as the Pythoness. Wikipedia |

The Oracle Priestess was believed to have spoken in a trance induced by organic gases emitted from below ground. Her esoteric utterances were then translated and reduced to writing by skilled scribes for the clients of Delphi. As important political leaders and their agents visited Delphi from all over Greece and beyond, there were a great deal of exchanges of intelligenc, credible or otherwise, through the oracles. In this context, Delphi was the diplomatic navel of the city-states of the world. However, because ancient Greek did not have punctuation mark, the scribes often played clever word games of unpunctuated sentences that lent themselves to interpretation by the clients which revealed their own predisposed inclinations as to their own fates.predisposed inclinations o |
